DNA pieces
(target DNA) of interest are obtained from the
larger DNA molecules by digestion with an appropriate
restriction enzyme.
Plasmid DNA (vector) is cut open by using the same enzyme. |
| l |
The target
DNA and the vector are joined together in the
presence of the enzyme DNA ligase. |

The formed
recombinant plasmid is moved to the host bacterial
cells, where it grows into many copies, and can
also encode the protein. |

In this
manner the genes for the hormone insulin, growth
hormone, interferon etc. can be transferred to
the bacterial cells, and the transformed cells
will produce these proteins in large amounts. |
