treatment for Parkinson's brings mixed results
|
Almost total relief of symptoms tempered by hints
of cancerous side effects.
By Kerri Smith
In
a recent research on stem cell treatment, Goldman and his
colleagues found that stem cell treatment has
relieved symptoms of Parkinson’s disease.
Parkinson’s disease kills off the neurons that produce
dopamine, thus causing problem with movement and balance
Goldman and his team used human midbrain tissue in which dopamine
cells are made and took the glial cells (function: for maintaining
proper growth of neurons) .The stem cells where cultured in
the glial rich environment.
The new dopamine neurons where transplanted into the rats brains.
The results showed that the animal recovered and showed proper
movements.
But the problem that lies with such treatment is that their
also remain certain cell which fail to become neuron and are
undifferentiated, thus keep on dividing and can cause tumour.
