For the first time a workshop was organized interrelating intellectual property rights and biotechnology and infusion of both in agriculture to generate wealth for the common man at Biotech Park Lucknow. The issues like challenge of feeding the world population, sharing agrarian land between food grains and bio-fuels to ensure food grain safety, rights of farmers to grow exclusively for exports to generate wealth through value additions in post harvesting of crops discussed. Even WTO issues related to opening up agriculture were discussed. The workshop was jointed organized by Biotech Park, Lucknow and Intellectual Property Lab.
The workshop was aimed to appraise the researchers, academia’s, entrepreneurs about the opportunity which can help in protecting the innovation made in agriculture in vide varieties in which farmers are developing and small handicap were specific to local areas.
Inaugurating the workshop Dr. Nityanand, Director, CDRI stressed the need for innovation, its application for society and protecting the interest of the innovators while analyzing the TRIPS agreement.
Sri R.K. Mittal, Agriculture Production Commissioner, Govt. of U.P., in his presidential remark hoped that the workshop will help in further innovations in field of agriculture. This will lead into enhanced agriculture production as well as it will provide opportunity in protecting innovations of scientist in the lab and innovation by farmers. Earlier welcoming the guest, Dr. P.K. Seth, CEO, Biotech Park said that today’s great concerned about the competition growing food and bio-fuel.

The workshop was attended by about 60 participants from different institutions and presentations were made by experts like Dr. SPS. Khanuja, Director CIMAP, Dr. Ramesh Chandra, Scientist, CISH, Lucknow, Dr. C.S. Nautiyal, Scientist, NBRI, Lucknow , Dr. H.M. Behl, Consultant Scientist, Biotech Park and other government officials, senior scientist and industry representatives. While expressing his views on IPR, Mr. Rahul Dutta, Patent Attorney, Intellectual Property Lab said that vision 2020 can be achieved by infusing IP protected biotechnology in agriculture. The experts also opined that small things like lock work of Aligarh, Chikenkari work of Lucknow, etc. should also be patented so that these cannot be patented by others.
