The two days Bioinformatics workshop entitled “Principles and applications of Bioinformatics in Biotechnology” is organized on 10th December, 2007 at Biotechnology Park, Lucknow and was inaugurated by Dr.S.P.S Khanuja, Director, CIMAP, this he did from his office through video conferencing and interacted with the participants from different institutions like ITRC, CIMAP, Integral University, Amity University and even candidates from different cities like Patna are attending the workshop.
Describing the power of the bioinformatics, Dr Khanuja said that English has 26 alphabets but biotechnology has only four alphabets (ATGC). These entire four letters write the entire genome which has several genes. Based on the number of genes which are functionally important then one would write about 500 books of average size. Any fast reader will take more then 47 years to read and understand this. However, with the application of bioinformatics one can understand, match functions and find solutions in few seconds.
The lectures in the workshop are being delivered by the experts of the local institutions and Biotech Park who use bioinformatics in their research. A special lecture on Intellectual Property Rights has also been included the workshop.
