Scientist have discovered that severity of type 1 diabetes can be reduced to some extent by infusion of person’s own umbilical cord blood Type 1 diabetes occurs when immune system goes haywire and Insulin producing cells get destroyed. Cord blood contains immune cells that can keep the immune system from attacking pancreas, holding the diabetes in check. It has been observed that Children given the cord blood have lower blood glucose levels and needed much less daily insulin therapy to control their diabetes than diabetic children who did not get the therapy. Since the findings are promising in future it can be used for the treatment of genetic diseases.
