Gene Transfer Therapy eases Parkinson's Treatment
18th April2007

Scientists discovered that gene therapy can be helpful in Parkinson’s treatment .In their previous study they found that certain growth factors can slow or stop the death of dopamine -producing brain cells. In their recent study they used a modified virus (adeno-associated virus) to deliver the growth factor gene neurturin into targeted brain cells. Through injections they introduce AAV-neurturin into striatum. One year outcome data revealed that in nine out of 12 patient’s 38 percent improvement in movement was observed.
