USDA restarted production of rice with Human Genes
March 6/2007

The Agriculture Department has given green signal for commercializing food crop engineered to contain human genes. Proteins extracted from them would be used as an anti-diarrhea medicine. Although the proteins are not inherently dangerous, there would be little control over the doses. Till now Ventaria has developed three varieties of rice, endowed with a different human gene that makes plant to produce human proteins like lactoferrin and lysozyme (bacteria fighting compounds) found in breast milk and saliva.
